‘Dawn, are you in bed again? This isn’t a hotel, you know.’ Mum at least had the decency to knock and not just barge straight in.

‘Just getting dressed,’ she lied.

‘Two weeks you’ve been here now, and when are you going to get another job?’

‘I am applying.’ Another lie. She had not told Mum about Paul Fiddler. There would have been too many questions, no real sympathy, and maybe even blame. Instead, she had lied and said she wasn’t needed at the pub over the summer holidays; she had told the truth about the shared house, though, which was no longer available. But as far as the real reasons were concerned, she kept them to herself. If Mum knew, it would never be left alone, picked at like a scab until it would never heal at all.

‘Well, I would like you to clean the bathroom, please. It gets dirty a lot quicker with two people using it, and I found hair in the plughole, so if you wouldn’t mind.’ The sound of her footsteps told Dawn she was walking away, the clump, clump of her tread on the stairs.

‘Guilt, always the guilt.’ And the article came back to mind. Maybe she was still suffering because she felt guilty. Not that she had done anything to encourage the attack, God knows she had not.

Maybe, she wondered – maybe reporting the whole thing might prove cathartic …?

It was this thought that took her to the police station.
